In 1981, when Phil Maxwell got a job in the East End and moved to London from Liverpool, he found himself living in a council flat in Pauline House at the end of Hanbury St where he lives to this day. “In Liverpool, they told me, ‘You won’t find people in London as friendly, they don’t have the Scouse humour.”” explained Phil, recalling his arrival in East London, “But when I moved here I found that Scouse humor and East End humour are almost the same, produced by similar forces. Just as in Liverpool, you have the river, the dockers, strong trade unions, a history of unemployment and seasonal work – humour developed out of hardship, people were able to laugh at their own demise. The East End was a small world and a wonderful place in those days. The area was a desert, so much corrugated iron, so many bombed out buildings, and many old Jewish people with a great sense of humour.”

As a teenager, Phil ran away from home in Coventry to Euston, “I stayed two nights at St Anne’s Centre in Soho and I fell in love with the place.” he told me, disclosing the origin of his affection for London. Although he spent his childhood making cameras out of boxes and created a darkroom in his bedroom, Phil’s aspirations were not encouraged at his secondary modern school,”You were basically taught you were useless and you’d be lucky if you got a job in factory,” he admitted regretfully. But it was in Liverpool where he had his first job, as a teacher of religious instruction, that Phil began to take pictures seriously. As he explained, “I was a great admirer of Bill Brandt, Humphrey Spender and Henri Cartier Bresson, and passionate to record the lives of ordinary people.” Living independently for the first time and escaping his catholic upbringing, Phil also came out amongst the teachers at his school and to some of the pupils whose parents he met on the gay scene at this time, which meant that he could no longer continue teaching. “I wasn’t going to be put in a situation where I was forced to be secretive about my sexuality.” he confided to me.

In London, Phil’s work as a media resources officer, preparing visual material for schools, allowed him an income and the time to pursue the photography that was his central concern. At once, he dedicated himself to documenting the lives of working people in the East End, commencing a lifetime’s project that thirty years later has led to the creation of an unparalleled archive of work, both in street photography and as a record of the popular antifascist political movements in London.

“I was obsessed with photography but I never thought I’d be able to make a living. And ultimately I was very lucky, because although I freelanced for some magazines, I never got a job on a major publication – which means that I kept all my negatives. And now I find that I am unique among photographers of my generation because I have complete ownership of my work. In the end, my lack of self-esteem worked to my advantage because it gave me freedom. I’ve found a way of working independently without having the integrity of my work undermined.”, outlined Phil, looking back without regrets upon the evolution of his singular career as a photographer.

The fluent pictures you see here, which serve as an introductory glimpse of his vast archive, are amongst the first Phil took in Spitalfields and the vicinity, after he arrived from Liverpool in 1981. This was the place as he found it – where he discovered his creative and personal freedom – the location which he has photographed ceaselessly throughout the intervening years and continues to photograph today. As well as recording the changes in the neighbourhood, these pictures capture many remarkable personalities that Phil knew personally. Phil’s involvement with his subjects means that he is never merely taking pictures, he is always recording life happening. Every single image is another frame in an ongoing drama, with the same people and places recurring over three decades. For this reason, Phil’s pictures have never contained anonymous faces in the street, because for him these were all the people he lived among every day.

Describing the couple stepping out of Whitechapel Station in the second photo below, Phil explained they lived in the flat below him and, once the wife died, her husband enjoyed the freedom to do all the things he was not allowed to do while she was alive. In the few years that he lived on after his wife’s death, Phil regularly steered him home drunk and left him sleeping in a chair. The demonstrators with bicycles in a lower photo were gathered in Brick Lane in support of Afia Begum, a Bengali woman who was threatened with deportation after her husband died in a fire in 1982.

It is this affectionate yet unsentimental relationship with his subjects that gives Phil Maxwell’s photographs their special quality. As Phil admitted open-heartedly, “I would be nowhere without these people, they are my constant inspiration. I always have a camera in my pocket and whenever I go out I always see something I have never seen before. I love the different cultures and histories that are on the doorstep. Wherever I travel in the world, I always come back and find a little of it here. I’ve always said I couldn’t live anywhere else – such a mixture of class, race, cultures, and aspirations and it’s all here in one go.”

Press Release:

The international Travel Photographer of the Year awards have always sought to recognise young and emerging talent as well as the work of professional photographers and skillful amateurs. The 2010 awards take this to new heights, with the introduction of a new award – the Young Photographers Alliance Award – and the division of Young TPOTY into two age groups plus, of course, the popular New Talent category and the First Shot (beginners) award.

"TPOTY has helped many photographers – not just the winners – to raise their profile, sell their work, get commissions or launch photographic career. However, we wanted to further bolster what we have to offer to new and emerging photographic talent, and have teamed up with the Young Photographers' Alliance to do just that. Both TPOTY and Young Photographers' Alliance want to help people passionate about photography to get a good grounding which will enable them to pursue photography as a career, and the result is an extraordinary opportunity for emerging photographers," said TPOTY founder, Chris Coe.

New Talent – 'Sell It!'
The New Talent category is for all amateur or semi-professional photographers aged 19 years and over who are looking to start a career in photography. It challenges them to tell the story of a place, a destination, an experience, a journey, even a travel commodity, in the style of a travel advert. The winner will journey to India and Nepal with Intrepid Travel to shoot a photo essay, receive Adobe Photoshop CS5  and Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3 software, a Young Photographers Alliance portfolio review and feedback, a Lexar Professional 300x 16GB CompactFlash card and Lexar Professional Dual-Slot Card Reader, and a customised leather portfolio case from Plastic Sandwich. They will also be offered representation by Axiom, England’s premier travel photographic agency.

Young TPOTY
The 2010 Young TPOTY category is themed ‘Big World, Small World’. This year the upper age limit has been extended to 18 and the award is split into two age groups with prizes for each group, giving younger entrants a better opportunity to win. Entrants aged 14 and under submit a portfolio of images which show a place or country both in close up and in wider views. Entrants aged 15-18 have a choice of two sub-themes – People or Environment – which they must depict in close up and wider view.

The Young Travel Photographer of the Year will be chosen from the winners of these two age groups, and will receive Adobe Photoshop CS5 & Adobe Photoshop Lightroom software, Lexar Professional 300x 16GB CompactFlash card and Lexar Professional Dual-SlotCard Reader, a Wacom Bamboo Fun Pen & Touch tablet, and a YPA portfolio review and feedback. The winner of the under 14 age group and the winners of the People and Environment categories of the age 15-18 section each receive Adobe Photoshop Lightroom software, a Photo Iconic image critique session and a Lexar Professional 300x 8GB CompactFlash card, while the runners-up receive Adobe Lightroom and a Photo Iconic critique session.

TPOTY/YPA Emerging Talent Award
This year the TPOTY judges will give a special award to one young photographer. This award will be given to the most interesting entry from a photographer aged 25 years and under who has entered either the New Talent or Young Travel Photographer of the Year categories. As part of their prize, the winner will be mentored by an experienced professional photographer through a place on the YPA mentoring programme, and will be offered the opportunity of representation from Axiom. Prior to participating in the programme, the winner will receive some comprehensive practical and creative photography tution on a Photo Iconic photography course.

Entry costs £20 for New Talent, while entry for Young TPOTY is completely free.  Images can be uploaded on the Travel Photographer of the Year website, or entrants may submit prints. Entries close on October 9th.

Emma says she's been taking pictures since she was big enough to hold a camera, now she just tweaks them with Photoshop.

“When I upload them to my computer, I edit them with the tint and all that and I saw what I wanted to see,” said Pace.

An art gallery in downtown Somerville, Art C's, is the first place to show her work.

Emma said, “They were having an art show and we went over there and that's when I decided this really is something I want to do, not just a hobby anymore.”

She sold six pieces, raking in a cool $400…making her a professional at the ripe old age of 14.

She laughed as she said, “My mom says I'm not the normal teenage kid.”

Pace has just signed a deal with Art Fest Expo International, in Dallas, to display and sell her work nationally.

“Oh, it feels so…it gives me butterflies every time I think about it,” exclaimed Emma.

She may be a professional artist, but her child-like innocence still comes through, like when I asked about her favorite picture…it's of a duck.

Pace answered, “Its reflecting off the water and its a white background, I love that one. Alex: why do you love that one the best? Because its different and its artsy I think, (laughs).”

“A lot catches my eye,” admitted Pace.

Like a tree in the park where we were doing our interview, Emma says she's produced more than 500 pictures.

This 14 year-olds life plan is set. She even has a motto to live by to make sure she reaches her goals.

“To never give up and always follow your dream. It doesn't matter how young you are. Doors are going to slam in your face, but you just keep going,” said Pace.

Emma has big plans for the future. Besides starting high school, a professional artist from Chicago wants to collaborate with her…and Emma's taking a class later this month to learn about all the capabilities her Nikon has…a camera she paid for herself.

We'd heard Panasonic was planning a more affordable stereoscopic 3D camcorder, but it looks like we won't have to wait until a mysterious July 28th Tokyo unveiling to find out for sure — it's called the HDC-SDT750, and Panny's advertising it as the “World's first 3D Shooting Camcorder.” Leaks at all the seams of the company's website afforded us the above picture, and the surprising revelation that the product may not be a brand-new camcorder, but rather an existing high-end 3MOS model (we'd guess the HDC-HS700) with a “3D conversion lens” attached. If the yet-to-be-activated product page's source code can be believed, the SDT750 will shoot in 1080p AVCHD at 60fps, feature Panny's proprietary Hybrid O.I.S. image stabilization technology, and come in a lovely shade of Henry Ford black. That's all we have for now (save a second tiny picture after the break) but rest assured we'll be keeping tabs on this one.

Update: Looks as if even more images and purported specifications have leaked out ahead of the official reveal.

[Thanks, John]

The Lenovo IdeaPad Y560d is another take on the multimedia 3D laptop, designed for users to experience the growing number of 3D compatible movies and games on the market.  Along with its ability to work with existing 3D media, the IdeaPad Y560d also has the ability to transform standard 2D movies and photos into an immersive 3D experience.  This is due to the included TriDef 3D technology, which is a mixture of display hardware, software, and special polarizer glasses.

The TriDef 3D technology included with the Y560d is combined with a high definition 15.6 inch widescreen, with 1366 x 768 resolution at a ratio of 16:9.  However, while the Y560d is definitely designed as a specialised 3D laptop, there are also a number of other features included.  Lenovo’s Enhanced Experience technology promises a number of performance improvements, with SSD and HDD storage combining to speed up applications, and Windows 7 boot-up and shutdown processes optimized for speed.

The Lenovo IdeaPad Y560d can be configured in multiple ways, with up to 8GB of DDR3 memory, up to 750GB of HDD storage, and a number of additional options.  Some of these options include a Blu-ray disk drive, an ambient light sensor, a ATI HD5730 1GB Radeon graphics card, and a touch-sensitive slide bar application.  The Y560d can be powered by an Intel Core i7 processor, although it is an i3 which is included in the base configuration.  Although there is a HDMI output for additional screen connections, the Y560d does not include Nvidia Optimus technology and is not 3D Blu-ray compatible.

Along with a few other laptops like the Origin EON15-3D and the Asus G5IJ-3D, the Y560d promises an affordable 3D laptop experience for the masses.  It will be available by the end of June and retail at $1199 for the basic model, which is a great price for anyone interested in an entry level 3D laptop.  Like always however, extra power and features are going to cost you extra, so keep that in mind if you are in the market for a 3D laptop.

Claudia Schiffer and Karl Lagerfeld Are Attacked by Fashion Editor of Black Lifestyle Magazine for Photo of Schiffer, Blacked-Up

I made new Photos in the last weeks – please tell me when you like them:

Tongeia fische by hyria

Images Blog

Claudia Schiffer has been attacked for offending black people after posing on a magazine cover made up as a black woman. The 39-year-old German supermodel wore black foundation and an afro-style wig in the photograph taken by fashion designer and photographer Karl Lagerfeld.

Lagerfeld had Schiffer made up as a black women in one of six photographs he took while putting together an advertising campaign for the vintage champagne Dom Perignon. The photos were published by German fashion magazine Stern Fotografie when it celebrated its 60th anniversary.

Accusations against Schiffer and Lagerfeld followed from Shevelle Rhule, the fashion editor of a London black lifestyle magazine, Pride. Ms Rhule said:

“It shows poor taste and it's offensive. There are not enough women of colour featured in mainstream magazines. This just suggests you can counteract the problem by using white models. I don't believe they deliberately set out to offend. They obviously see it as being arty and feel that they are pushing boundaries. But clearly no thought has been given to the history behind what they have done and the comparisons it draws with minstrel shows.”

To which I would reply: 'Shevelle, lighten up'. Her comment is the kind that perpetuates raw nerves about race and creates a path of spikey eggshells for people, black and white, to walk on. Society doesn't need race relations zealots, quangocrats or Pride fashion editors lecturing designers (or filmmakers or writers or rap singers…) on what they can or can't do. It's small-minded. Already an online magazine has responded to the photos with conformist knee-jerk political correctness by saying one of the other photos, of Schiffer as an Asian, is “just wrong”, scolding that Lagerfeld should have used more than one model in the interests of racial diversity.

Fashion, like fiction and film and other creative industries, should be free to play with any images it chooses. Did Ms Rhule also take offence at white French actor Gerard Depardieu recently playing mixed-race Alexander Dumas (using black make-up)? Or Eddie Murphy impersonating a white (jewish) person? Or black British actor Adrian Lester who played the white Danish prince, Hamlet? Or the black actor, David Oyelowo, who played white English king Henry VI?

Would she criticise images of Bob Dylan or the Rolling Stones dressed up as women? How about pantomime dames, women actors dressed as men, Eddie Izzard in frock and lipstick, comedians pretending to be children…?

As soon as you get into determining whether blacks can play whites and women can play men but not the other way round, you're proscribing the creative process and engaging in censorship. Clamping down on the arts in that way (even commercial arts like advertising) is as restricting as squashing free speech.

As for Rhule's comment that Lagerfeld and Schiffer were suggesting the photograph of a 'black' Schiffer would substitute for using black models in mainstream magazines – that's just plain foolish. Rhule then seems to have chucked minstrels into the discussion just for shock value.

In fact the photo was one of a series of six in which Lagerfeld was playing with Schiffer's image. Another showed her as a secretary, a third as an Asian woman. In a fourth she was dressed and made up as eighteenth century French queen, Marie Antoinette and in a fifth she was androgynous. The fashion shoot theme was fantasy and imagination. Lagerfeld wanted to play with Schiffer's face and Shiffer's image. He didn't want to use other models. He wasn't trying to portraying racial diversity – he was portraying imaginary Claudia Schiffers. And has every right to.

A spokesman for Lagerfeld responded to Rhule's criticism, saying she was taking them out of context: “The images were designed to reflect different men's fantasies. The pictures were not intended to offend, they were done very creatively and are some of Karl Lagerfeld's favourite images of Claudia. People should not jump to conclusions.”

Yet there are many people with vested interests in Britain and other liberal democracies who make a good living from jumping to conclusions and playing the race card in cases which can only trivialise genuine instances of racism. Political correctness about race and ethnicity has battened onto society like a barnacle on a boat. It would be a democratic step forward if those who have a professional interest in taking offence at 'racism' and other -isms would pick their battles more wisely.

It would also be good if the race relations industry ditched the term “people of colour”. What is it supposed to indicate?! What colour? Black? Dark brown? Sienna? All those and more? Does it imply that white people – with their variously pink, peachy, creamy, olive-toned, ugly red, bluey-white, brown or orangey skin – have no colour? Why aren't whites called “people of non-colour” then? Or “people of no-colour”?

Black and white are just words. They're quick and easy terms to use for those who want or need to indicate skin colour and they're neutral. People (like Ms Rhule perhaps) who want to take offence at one (and not the other) always will. But they're misguided. Countering racism is always worth doing. But cranking up and maintaining raw nerves unnecessarily does no-one any good. It just increases division between black and white and injects a zealous, scolding tone into debate which would benefit from more freedom, less 'sensitivity' and – in a case like the Schiffer/Lagerfeld photos – a bit of playfulness.

Women's Wear Daily turns 100 today and for the occasion, we'd like to take a look back at the fashion bible's very first issue, from July 13, 1910. What were some of the big stories?

  • Talk Of A Craze For Black In Paris: The black Ascot trend traveled overseas (by boat) to France.
  • The Coming Fashion In Hats: Milliners shall not be shunned for for using white ribbon.
  • Indications Of Changes In Skirt Fashions: According to “The Gentlewoman,” the lengths will evolve elegantly, rather than radically.
  • Mass Meeting Of Manufacturers Today: Members of ye olde Cloak, Suit and Skirt Manufacturers' Protective Association and the Associated Manufacturers off Ladies' and Misses' Garments got together in NYC.

Fujitsu’s latest consumer tablet PC has emerged with little fan-fare this weekend on the company’s web-store.  The Fujitsu LifeBook TH700 starts at $1,099 and has a 12.1-inch dual-mode display – that reacts both to multi-touch finger gestures and an active stylus for more precise input – together with an Intel Core i3-350M 2.26GHz processor, 4GB of RAM and a DVD burner.  There’s also a 320GB HDD, Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1 and Intel HD graphics with an HDMI output.
The convertible notebook also packs a fingerprint reader, webcam, dual microphone array and a 6-cell 5,200mAh battery which Fujitsu reckon will be good for up to 5hrs run-time.  More expensive than an iPad, certainly, but offering the functionality of a full desktop OS – Windows 7 Home Premium – and the benefits of a handwriting-friendly active digitizer.  The Fujitsu LifeBook TH700 should begin shipping from July 5th 2010. We’re not sure what Fujitsu is thinking here, but it has to stop. Get a load of its motion control interface running on a 15.6-inch laptop. Yes, a 15-inch laptop. We might be able to understand this if it was plugged into a big flat panel television or projector, but trying to manipulate those itty bitty controls from 10-feet away is, well, silly. The Core i3-350M-powered Fujitsu LifeBook AH700/5A does feature HDMI-out but you still have to place the laptop in front of you (and the TV) with the display popped open so that the camera can see your movements.
